Denise Hagan of the Puuya Foundation will be a speaker at the QCOSS Conference this year. Denise was chosen to talk about the wonderful community led changes that the Puuya Foundation have instigated in the community.
In 2000 a group of Queensland Government employees started working with the very remote community of Lockhart River. They were shocked by the disadvantage that they saw and came to respect and appreciate the people and the location.
They worked with the community to identify a balance between traditional values and modern Australian culture. They saw potential for community led change in the area and with their new understanding of historical hardships and the present challenges faced by the people of the community, these individuals decided they wanted to help the people of Lockhart River to articulate their vision and work towards a positive future to elevate their standard of living and quality of life.
The purpose of the Puuya Foundation is to develop everyday leaders to empower local communities. Their commitment to an authentic partnership sees the Puuya Foundation embedded in the local community, working side by side with community members to develop skills, knowledge, competence and confidence in order to advance the community’s future.
The Puuya Foundation seeks to empower the local community of Lockhart River to set goals and visions for their community’s future and to develop and nurture the skills, knowledge and confidence needed to realise their vision.
The Puuya Foundation’s Strategic Plan highlights the next steps the Puuya Foundation will take in its mission to close the gap, and elevate the quality of life and opportunities of the people of Lockhart River, Cape York until they meet or exceed those of other Australian communities.
