As of 1 July 2016, 'non-protected' SCV holders who meet certain residency, income and character criteria will be able to apply for permanent residency and thereafter citizenship. But what does this mean for the significant number of New Zealand residents in Australia without a clear path to permanent resident, and therefore also without access to key entitlements, such as welfare payments, the NDIS, social housing or study assistance? Emerging Voices were invited to attend the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse’s Multicultural forum in Brisbane in February 2016, and also to attend a private meeting with Commission staff to provide their feedback and ideas. The Royal Commission was particularly interested in Emerging Voices contributing to the policy directions, and where appropriate, sharing stories.
