Housing strategy provides a foundation for solutions

The Queensland Government Housing Strategy that was released today provides a foundation for solutions to address the growing issues of affordable housing and homelessness.

Queensland Council of Social Service (QCOSS) welcomes the Government’s commitment to a ten year outlook and to providing approximately 4,000 new social or affordable dwellings for Queenslanders.

We also applaud the introduction of the Housing and Homelessness Research Alliance to support evidence based policy development.  Our hope is that this group will be able to establish outcomes for housing and homelessness while focusing attention on what needs to be achieved and benchmarking performance measures.

We know that jobs are essential to keeping people out of poverty, however a housing strategy needs to remain focused on housing.

Housing is a basic human right and solutions to address housing and homelessness will require a solid focus on the person and home.

We look forward to working with the department to implement effective place-based approaches and integrated service delivery in the identified housing precincts and communities across the state.

Full comment in the QCOSS State Budget Commentary 2017-18 to be released on Friday 16 June 2017.

For more than 55 years QCOSS has worked throughout Queensland to eliminate poverty and inequality.

QCOSS is an independent non-government organisation representing close to 600 organisations and individuals throughout Queensland.
