Housing panel needed for entire state

Queensland Council of Social Service (QCOSS) welcomes the Government’s plans for a housing supply panel for South East Queensland.

The South East Queensland Housing Supply Expert Panel is intended to ensure that housing supply keeps pace with estimated growth in the region, and follows calls from QCOSS and the Property Council of Australia to establish an independent body to monitor housing supply and demand for the entire state.

“We commend the Government for establishing the South East Queensland Housing Supply Expert Panel, however, it only goes part of the way towards addressing the issue,” QCOSS CEO Mark Henley said.

“Housing affordability is one of the biggest issues people are facing today.

“All local government areas in Queensland require the services of an independent body to collect, monitor and review data on housing.

“QCOSS hopes that the community sector will be invited to participate as one of the ‘experts’ on the panel and would welcome the opportunity to working with the Government to implement an effective response that services the needs of all of the state.”

QCOSS is pleased that work is underway to progress actions under the Queensland Government Housing Strategy 2017 – 2020 and urges all involved to ensure the focus remains on providing genuine affordable housing that meets the needs of all people in our communities.

Housing is a basic human right and solutions to address housing and homelessness require a solid focus on the person and home.

For more than 55 years QCOSS has worked throughout Queensland to eliminate poverty and inequality.

QCOSS is an independent non-government organisation representing close to 600 organisations and individuals throughout Queensland.
